Actos is an oral medicine which is used to regulate the level of glucose in the blood. This is a relatively popular drug amongst patients who have type 2 diabetes. These patients cannot produce enough insulin of their own and what little insulin they do produce is not completely effectively as the cells of the body do not respond to it in a proper manner. Since the mechanism of insulin production and its working is compromised, the level of glucose in the blood rises and this is where Actos comes in. The drug is not only commonly used in the United States but also the world over. However, much to the dismay of some of the users the drug is also linked to certain side effects.
Actos Side Effects
Some of the most common side effects of the drug when taken on its or in combination with other drugs are: sinusitis, sore throat, upper respiratory tract infection, head ache, , muscle aches and hypoglycemia.
In the clinical trial stage, some ten thousand people with type 2 diabetes were treated with Actos. The results indicated that the side effects of the drug can range from mild discomfort (sore throat, headache) to potentially life threatening conditions (congestive heart failure). Other serious side effects include: bladder cancer, macular edema, bone fractures and hepatic failure.
Another finding of the clinical trials suggested that there might be a link between Actos and increased risk of bladder cancer. To further investigate this, a ten year study was started that had approximately 193,000 diabetes patients. The results pointed out the fact that prolonged use of the drug can significantly increase the chances of bladder cancer. These concerns have led the French and German governments to pull the drug off the shelves. The U.S. Food and Drug (FDA) also issued a warning in 2011 which talked about the risk bladder cancer due to extended use of the medicine for more than a year.
